Because since Mayhold on, Ive got the fax on my wall, in my studio. I sat in the balcony and had Peter Green and John McVie with him. Yeah. See, if you price yourself as an average session man," you get every Tom, Dick and Harry calling you up for sessions, and I'm not into doing just anybody's session. Can you unpack that for me a little bit? And then you went on hiatus. Most of them get bored by it. You want to leave it so you're backing them, rather than leading them. I dont know. And we did that for about five years, that grueling schedule. You must put that in there, the preface, because its important. They're really good. Would you ever be interested in doing regular studio work, such as commercials? May 21, 2009. I sing with a microphone and a music stand. And it rolls around, and halfway through the song it starts rolling back out. Lou had called a day off, so I was going to go, but when Lou found out about it, he called a recording session for that night. And, then after that, I continued looking for doctors, maybe hoping Id hear what I wanted to hear. But some little old woman could have walked in. Once you've made your name, you can go into a band, say the Jefferson Starship, and people will say, "There's Aynsley Dunbar. I stood up and screamed. How did it feel to be told that you needed to change what you were doing? So I decided to try and teach myself. Which made me, inevitably, want to put it back together, without Steve. I did manage to learn a lot about music by looking at it and trying to discern what was going on. I was always a songwriting sort of guy. ManagementHerbie was freakin out, he was lovin it. And the songs I gotta tell you, it was unbelievable. Cause you know, they had a singer before me, named Robert Fleischmann. Now, I was grateful for everything that had happened. The label said, We think you need a frontman. That's why I enjoy playing "White Rabbit" with the Starship. Are you unhappy that the other guys in the band are still out there performing this music? I like to play on stage and have that good feeling that comes from the people. There was one guy who really gave me a hard time taking apart everything I did. Call it anything. I guess I have a desire to sing and write music again, and Im letting it take me places. Did they give you any advice? Eventually I got bored with the screeching sound of the violin. I could go out and I could have eight, nine, ten vodkas, and then I wouldnt drink for another three or four days. I thought it was silly to license songs for commercials and stuff. The only time in my life I ever did was that time I was forced into it when the rest of the band was at the bar drinking. And I said to Herbie, the manager, I think this is a bad ideathat it would fracture the band on some level. Then we had Aynsley Dunbar, he taught me a lot. I didnt jump into that. I arrived in L.A. and his wife picked me up at the airport and took me to his house, where I lived for nine months. I mean, who knew? Since 1968, Cynthia has cast over 48 famous rock singers', guitar players', and managers' penises. I called Jonathan. I was in Hawaii. Oh he is one of my favorite drummers on the planet. I got a phone call from Jon, and I could tell Neal was on the phone, cause I can tell when the line levels down, and I could hear him breathing, I think. So youre not enjoined from discussing him in public? And Journey was on tour, so I said Fine, Ill do that. And so I went down and sat with this mastering engineer. I always had the idea in mind that you never go to a big town unless you go with a band. With the smaller drum, I can get a more solid, compact sound, which is better for the audience out front to hear. And then the second song we wrote, I was downstairs in Gregg Rolies house, where I was living, in Mill Valley, and Perry was over, and we were sittin down in the beanbags in the music room, and he started singin me these melodies that he had, for Lights. And I just started putting the stumble to it, felt like it was gonna be a stumble, and tried to give it some Hendrix-y type chords, to make it sound cool, and then I added a bridge to that, for a guitar solo, and that one was done, in about ten minutes. Im in the boil-down process. And then it felt terrible._ [laughs]_. RM: Not too many rock drummers use 20" bass drums. And the legacy continues, with Arnel. It worked out really great. Was it weird, coming back to Journey after that? I just dont hang out in that environment anymore. PERRY: Yeah. And he was playin, I think, nine Journey songs and three of his original songs. And they laid down on each side of it and tried to pull sexy poses with the star. RM: And he, in turn, will take you to different places; RM: This all ties in with what you were telling me the other night about how you base most of what you do on listening to the melody. [laughs] But in those days it was a bomb. I just wanna quit. So Im really excited about getting out there and just being completely in control of whats going on, for real. I joined the band in 1978. I started writing music again, at the beginning of last summer. Every time I told somebody I was writing a story about the new lead singer of Journey, Id get the same incredulous response: Steve Perrys not the lead singer of Journey anymore? Even though the piece I was writing was mostly going to be about Arnel Pineda (whose pre-Journey work can be seen here) and the present-day incarnation of the band, I knew I couldnt write anything about Journey without getting in touch with Steve Perry. We were just playing dance music, but because I had been practicing for a few years, I was able to play along with all of the people who were my heroes. Eric wasnt up to it. They wanted to get on the road, and I said Well, lets just get the video done. So we got the When You Love A Woman video doneI was packing my whole left side in ice between takes. RM: What set-up are you using these days? They all worked in the daytime and they'd come together at night to play jazz. Aynsley Dunbar returned home from touring with David Bowie to find a message from Herbert waiting for him. You feel like youre on a high-wire all the time. Thats right. After not having played on stage for several months, that was a lot of stran, but after wards I felt like I could have gone on and played some more. The rock drumming GIANT turned down both Jimmy Page's offer to form Led Zeppelin and Robert Fripp's to start King Crimson from out of the ashes of Giles, Giles & Fripp; quit the original Jeff Beck. The album was released in 1968 in Canada, France, Sweden, the UK, and the US with a limited re-release the following year. Which was, I gotta get signed before its too late. [laughs]. So the first gig I did with him, I was just learning the songs. I walk onstage. I didnt talk about how he still gets paid like a motherfucker even though he shouldnt be. RM: Who were the drummers you were listening. AD: When Craig writes a song, he will actually make a demo tape with a drum track on it, which is great because it gives me ideas. To cut out the over-ring on the bass drums, I have them lined with half- inch thick foam rubber . That's basically what it's all about. So you were always opposed to that stuff? Don Ellis, who was running the west coast side of Columbia at the time, heard the tape and really liked the group. Whether its making a movie or making music. I was the new kid. I sing with myself all the time I'm playing. After all those years of doing everything, it didnt change my original drive, my need to get some music out there or do something creative. There is only so much you can do before it bores everybody to death. So, because of his wishes, thats the way things go down. I was a Journeyman. Its extremely gratifying to have people come up and say Open Arms was my prom song, and to this day, my husband and I still listen to it. Or when guysll come up and say, Yknow, I wasnt into youse guys, but if I took a chick to your concert you know what Im sayin? I get the whole spectrum. Lets go fuckin be Journey again. I wouldnt have done that if I had any desire to leave the group. I was always on the edge of being what I expected out of myself, and what people wanted me to be, and I never wanted to settle for anything short of what it should be. Then Rod Coombes for a while. **. When Im ready Im ready. And I said, I understand that. Everybody understood that. AD: Dixieland, or sometimes more of a swing-type sound. AD: No, but Ludwig wants me to start doing clinics. I think the beginning of the end was when Neal started his solo career. You became one of the biggest bands in the world. So I decided to try drums. I remember that tour, the Raised on Radio tour. So in retrospect [laughs] maybe it wasnt the smartest thing I ever did, because he went, Well, Neals doin one, why cant I do one? And everybodys goin, Well, Neals not doin anything thats gonna conflict with Journey, yknow? So at the end of a night, you feel great. When I get involved in something I like to keep it going, day by day. I think he contributed so much to the sound of the band, obviously, to where those songs are gonna be embedded in everybodys heads and hearts forever. We all put our lives and sweat and blood and tears into this thing. Anybody who plays in a group must realize that everybody in the group must always be aware of everybody else. When he was touring behind his solo record? Im not whining. Im looking at it very simply. Then we'd go out on the road again and when I'd get back, I would have to start over again because I wouldn't have the chance to practice on the road. I said, . But most of the time I had a free hand. RM: I noticed you and Craig looking at each other a lot. Well. During the time I was with Bowie, I also did Nils Lofgren's first solo album. I loved touring. And a lot of things we did, but the point is we were toast. But I didnt realize what we had done together until I stopped. Everything's electronic. Thats what I want to be doing. Then he started hitting the drugs, because I think he got bored, and he started becoming a space case. And Im off Sony for the first time since 78. [laughs] Please. And I was not gonna be part of that. There was a statement I made on a VH1 special, which Im sure youve heardthat I never really felt part of the band. RM: Do you do anything to stay in shape so that you can playas hard as you do night after night? It wasn't like, "Well, I've played every- thing 1 want to play, so now. I guess its because maybe Id found a life. I like doing all of that. But along with this, you have to print that I cant blame them. We were supposed to talk serious contract papers with him right after 4th of July weekend that year. Are you not allowed to talk about him on the record? No. It was a real great experience. . Steve! But for the most part, Im just glad that I didnt completely F up everything. At the end of the last video from my solo album, for Foolish Heart, theres an extra tag-on section that I shot for the video, to just tell everybody that that particular phase of my career was now over and now Im back to Journey. No rehearsal-just get on the stage and play. RM: Do you structure your solos any particular way? They're bringing out electronic drum kits now, that you can play on stage. Im sure I was a bitch to deal with. Trial By Fire? What was the deal with that? After the tour, they got back in touch and asked me about being in the band, because Eric had unfortunately passed on. The traditional grip is more complicated, but it's easier for me to play. So they put up with it for about 4 1/2 years before they told me to get out. Is it that way in England? I imagine the band had become a huge business, given all the records youd sold. It was like getting over some kind of love affair, you know. Speaking to Mojo in a recent interview, Wood, . It was really great. I wanted to play. Cause hes brilliant. I was going to the fair in my home town. We wanna know when youre going into surgery, because we want to tour. And yknow I didnt feel like major surgery was a band decision. I got these ProTools sketches of songs, and I guess its time to record some of em. Rock journeyman Aynsley Dunbar has proven himself one of the finest drummers in the business for over twenty years, whether as a member of several bands or as a session musician. At this point, it seems that it will be a rock and roll album. I found that I liked using two bass drums. I just told somebody that, a couple weeks ago, a writer that Im working withmy own voice is sometimes difficult to hear. In England, at that time, American records were about four years behind. You cant bust me for steroids, but youre gonna bust me for perjuryI get it! And we had differences of opinion in some areas, which eventually wore us down a bit. One time, I went therethere used to be a coffee shop right in front of it, and I was having coffee, watching people. And lo and behold, all of a sudden you started hearin Lights on the radio. In the winter of 1969 Retaliation appeared at the 5-day Actuel Festival, which was also attended by Frank Zappa . And I went on a hike, one I had done many times before this incredible trail, its pretty intense. Ludwig has these cast hoops that fit perfectly. My first solo thing, I think, was maybe six, seven years later. RM: Are there any particular drummers whose solos you like? Fuck Steveyknow. That was the last time. When I did drink, it was in excess. And I ran out of the coffee shop and said, I gotta get in on this. [laughs] She looked up, her eyes got like saucers. I still feel like I'mlearning to play. If you're playing nice and relaxed in front of 20,000 people, they're not going to pick up any energy from that. AD: Tone quality , more than anything else. It wasnt easy to walk out, but I had to do it. Yeah. Completely. He sent me the ticket the day before I left. He is a drummer, best known for his work with Frank Zappa, David Bowie, and Journey. Thats a tough question. And a lot of time spent together can chew on a friendship. He has the ability of playing perfectly many different styles: jazz (yes, jazz! You think they would have been happier if theyd made it in that prog-rock incarnation? Zappa let me do whatever I wanted to with it, so I played like a frustrated drummer. I didnt have that under my belt. The band is getting better and better, and with everyone writing, I have more opportunities to play different feelings on songs. But Im sure that if they could have been successful the way they originally set out to be, that would have been fine with them. So it was the best of all worlds, I think, when I got into a band that had the ability to play in a progressive way but was open-minded about writing songs. So at the end of that conversation, I said Look, you go call whatever you wanna do with whomever youve checked out something else. What are you talking about? And they would show me on the X-rays, and the MRIs. **When you started your solo career, was that the beginning of the end for Journey? So, there are certain parts of the song which have to be played the same because they are part of the music. I'll just leave it awhile and see what else develops, and then I'll get something. Yeah, the Oh Sherrie record. But he didn't really extend my feelings-he just helped me understand something I wanted to be doing, which was reading music. I think its up to almost 50 million, now. I met him when Journey was opening up for Jeff Beck, before Steve was in the band. So when you told them you couldnt do it anymoreat that point, were you thinking of it as a hiatus, or a breakup? David Frieberg, our bass and key- board player, had been going to Nautilus for about a year, so I decided to go along and try it and see what it was like. You can't have million-note fills allover the place be- cause people can't hear them, they can't understand it, and so they won't want to buy it. Youd think that a certain amount of success would squelch certain drives. So I find it better to listen to what is being played on the top and then react to that. Although it may not have been a good idea at the time, there is nothing wrong or demeaning with using a click track. See, its funny. And I started learning how to craft song songs, instead of just jams. And he picks Journey. I have to price myself above that sort of stuff. So I thought about It, you know, and I went back home. But when you had that conversation, did you get the sense that they thought you were just going out on your own? Schon and Herbert flew to Los Angeles to meet with the noted sideman for . If you were to play maybe 8th notes at that point, people could hear it and under- stand it. I practically learned to play them on stage. We can all play crush rolls around the drum kit, and play every note possible in a drum fill, but it will just sound like mush to the average person. And I think that proving myself was something that went on for quite some time with the. I have four 19" crash cymbals, a 21" swish on the left and a 21" Chinese on the right, and a 22" Earth ride cymbal. You mentioned Aynsley Dunbar, who is such a great, yet often overlooked, drummer. And theyre good. Well, he did the same thing, way before we did! Shortly after that, I disbanded Retaliation and formed Blue Whale, but I could never get the same brass section to stay in the band. I had an offer to join the Yardbirds, with Jimmy Page, when they did their last tour, but I'd just started Retaliation. Its no different. If somebody said anything to me, I'd blow up, because my nerves were shattered from being in a complete state of exhaustion. Weve had our problems too, but if it wasnt for Herbie, I woulda had no chance, to sing on that grand stage. The group released many albums from 1969-1970, including a self-titled work, Doctor Dunbar's Prescription, also to Mum From Aynsley . Well, disagreements are part of life! Then I finally got lessons when I was about 13. Same for the bass. Aynsley Dunbar Marital Status. AD: Sometimes I'll write out something just to remind myself at rehearsal, but I'll usually just remember it. I don't like to have every- thing I do so organized that I spend all of my time reading every little note. I still felt this panic to get a deal, get signed, maybe make another record. We just try not to talk about him. After talking to Jon and Neal, I went back to my home town for a while, and I started doing things that people didnt understand. **. He said he was having health issues, and he needed to have hip replacement, and this and that. And Ive played some of the stuff for friends, and for some people that arent afraid to tell me the truth. RM: Let's talk about the Jefferson Starship. That was one of the most cathartic and painful and wonderful experiences Ive ever had, to go through the entire catalog, all the B-sides of albums that Id forgotten about, and remember everything about the sessions, and remember the writing of em, the struggles, the accomplishments. Probably some time ago, yeah, I could have done that. Call it the J-Boys. He didn't have any idea of which side of the beat he was on half of the time. And I tried to get to David Chase to try to thank him, and I have yet to be able to. But I didnt see it until the first time it aired, that Sunday night. Gene and Paul have to have a drummer that they feel interprets their style. I was shocked when I heard that.. Only one night did I have to have a shot of B12 with an anti-inflammatory. It ends up costing an absolute fortune. It was so cool. And people didnt understand what that meant. But thats okay. Ronnie Wood paid tribute to former bandmate Jeff Beck, saying he was untouchable when at his best.. AD: I was into everything. And so we were basically known as a touring band. But I personally thought it was dumb. Was that the last time you saw them? AD: When I started off listening to music as a child, I always followed the lead. Its like I saidI didnt crack the stone. So I did. RM: Do you have a set of pads in your dressing room? When somebody says, Weve checked out a few singers, its like your wifes saying, Look, while you were goneI know a few guys, and I just wanna know what youve decided to do, because I need to know. My feeling at that point is very simple: What am I going back to now? I did four months with Jeff, but he only liked to work about one day a month, which was not enough for me. Did that tension persist throughout your tenure with the band? And us being on this mission together, to be the greatest, and write the greatest songs, and come up with great sounds, and fight for the greatest performances. The following are excerpts from the interview with Singer by Ultimate Classic Rock: Theyd tried to work with Eric on two separate occasions, but he wasnt well enough. So he sat in on two songs and then he came back and sat in my car and started chatting about session work in Los Angeles and how much money could be made and how I could make a good living out of it. And not until it really took off, I think, did that question really get answered. Do you think you'll have your own group again sometime? And at that point were all thinking, Oh, wow. I think the last show, was at the end of January, 87. And he was a great vocalist for what they were looking for, but they didnt want to have a singer out front. It was like being on a baseball team. RM: Do you do all of your own tuning, or is your roadie able to do some of it? It's kind of a long solo about 27 or 28 seconds. It's something I was thinking about, but it is to the point where it sounds like everybody's done it all with what's there. I would read in down beat that so and so's new record was out, I'd go to the shop and never see it. I didn't know who the hell John Mayall was, so I asked my wife, and she said she thought he was a. country/western singer. a story about the new lead singer of Journey.
